Tech Savvy Preschoolers

Posted in Blog

It amazes me to see how quickly my 2 year old has learned to use my iPad. I have not exposed him to electronic devices as much as some may have at this age nor do I let him use it without me watching (more for fear of it getting thrown across the room than for content) but we have a few apps that he loves and he learned to navigate the technology so quickly. Probably the coolest thing about preschool apps is that unlike the ones my 6 and 9 year old love, preschool apps are nearly all educational. Whether they are clicking an animal to hear what noise it make, moving objects around, or doodling they are learning with every use. If you are comfortable introducing electronics to your preschooler, I have listed a few of my favorites below (some are paid, some are free and some have free sample versions. I do not normally pay for apps so if there is a fee, they are worth it):
  • Old MacDonald by Duck Duck Moose - I really like several of their apps but this is his favorite. There are at least a dozen farm scenes that the child can put in action by clicking the different animals.
  • Dora Vacation - This is cute, especially if your child loves Dora or Diego. Similar to the Old MacDonald app I listed above, this one has multiple scenes but in this case the child drags objects to where they belong on the screen. The scenes go along with the story so it is more like an interactive puzzle book.
  • Doodle Buddy (FREE) - There are a ton of doodle apps out there and really they are all pretty good. The child can pick a color and draw all over with their finger tips.
  • I Hear Ewe (FREE) - This is a really cute noises app that allows the child to click the animal or even vehicle to hear the sound it makes.
Since I have not explored as many apps for 4 and 5 year olds, you may also want to check out this article where Parents Magazine ranked the 10 Best Apps for Preschoolers.
